County Cllr Chris Bray, of Abbey Close, Teignmouth, writes:
A number of residents have contacted me with concerns about the DCC Amendment Order notice in both your paper and on street signs. They have been worried that there will be a reduction in parking, or that those, previously free, spaces in The Strand or Brunswick Street will become paying.
I can assure your readers that the proposals, and that is what they are, proposals, would never be approved by me, or, I am sure any other future councillor for Teignmouth, if that was the intention.
I am pleased to say that basically, the traffic orders in the town centre are to increase the number of parking spaces.
Last year, Cllr David Cox and I went round the town centre and found a number of places where it makes no sense for there to be yellow lines. We have persuaded the council to make them into parking spaces. Examples of this are the increased, admittedly paying, spaces provided in The Strand near to the lifeboat and in the bay outside the multi-use games area. There will also be a number of 30 minute, limited waiting, non paying spaces behind the large Co-op, in Lower Brook Street.
For further clarification of all the extra spaces, there is a very clear map and notes available for study in the library.
DCC has also responded to residents' and traders' requests and following representations from the residents of Leander Court, who told us that large vehicles could get stuck on the corner of The Strand, some parking space will be taken out to enable large vehicles to navigate the bend. (We have also put up signs to discourage them going in that direction in the first place.)
As far as I know this is the only parking space which will be taken out, though there are, I believe, more than ten new spaces in the town centre.
Some time ago I arranged a meeting with the residents of Barnpark Road who were concerned about access to their drives and even more importantly, the lack of access by emergency vehicles, delivery vehicles and refuse lorries. After a considerable amount of consultation, proposals have been brought forward, which I hope meets residents' needs.
Any residents who continue to have a concern, please look at the plans in the library and then respond to the order by June 3 to The County Solicitor, at County Hall, Exeter EX2 4QD or on-line at DCC.
