Alderman Mary Strudwick, of Charlton Court, Bank Street, Teignmouth, writes:

Like many residents of Teignmouth, I have read the latest Conservative leaflet entitled Teignmouth Matters, which, of course, it really does,

Interestingly, the Conservatives seem to agree with the previous Liberal Democrat councillor, Chris Bray, on many things, such as investment in local community schemes, many of which are now well under way.

These include:

l Rebuilding the Carlton Theatre, (but ignoring the money Devon County and Teignbridge, both under the Lib Dems, have already invested in it).

l The Fish Quay – Cllrs Cox and Bray obtained a remarkable £450,000 from DCC's Investing in Devon Funds as well as actively promoting this scheme. It was going to happen.

l Residents' parking schemes, proposed by Chris, who promised to fight for increased town centre parking including following the Brunswick Street re-development in his efforts to deal with problems of summer parking. Will the Conservatives follow his lead?

So a great deal of investment has already been made in our town. Walk along the Den, remember the state it was in during the nineties? Look at it now. Look, too, at the improved buildings and facilities.

The PPC for the Conservatives rather shaded the truth by claiming in her leaflet that she had a 'column' in the Teignmouth Post and its sister paper the Teignmouth News. In reality she has an advertisement, written to look like a column.

She also has another publication, Teignbridge Matters, making many very costly promises in which she intends to rectify faults in health and education, which many of us who have been around a while know stemmed from the days of Conservative ideologies.

The Tories keep saying that there needs to be cuts in spending. How can they be promising more investment and yet promising cuts at the same time?
