WITH the Local Government Elections only a few months away, many presently incumbent councillors will surely be hoping to be re-elected.

However, for some it would be their first time in office.

Cllr Beryl Austen, who sits on Kingsteignton Town Council, weighs in on what life is like as a town council.

Cllr Austen said: ‘Kingsteignton is a typical Devon town with many independent charitable organisations working for the benefit of the community.

‘In addition it has a voluntary town council who meet regularly and organise the business of the council, employ staff to run the business of the Council as directed by its members and look after its assets.

‘Councillors details are indicated in the Newsletter and each ward member is regularly approached from residents with regard to information required or matters needing the attention of the council to improve the town.

‘The council has the task of allocating the funding received by the town from rates and Grants for the benefit of the Town.

‘It fixes its share of the funds paid as rates by the residents and uses it to its best advantage.

‘Being concerned with devoting time to the town is a pleasant task and satisfaction is experienced when efforts made improve the service and amenities of the town.’
