THE design of the replacement building for the Carlton Theatre has been slammed by councillors.

'Hideous' was one of the descriptions applied to the £4.3 million multi-use structure proposed for the prime Teignmouth seafront location.

Cllr Terry Falcao was not at all happy with the proposed look of the building, which will replace the crumbling old theatre.

'It is only marginally better than what's there already. I cannot support something so hideous – I want a wow building that we can be proud of, and will not settle for second best,' he told a town council meeting on Tuesday.
