Sally Newton, of Newton Abbot, writes:
My father fought in the Second World War to defeat fascism - the persecution and annihilation of minorities being blamed for the troubles of the countries concerned.
We have big problems in the UK. Our public services - the NHS, our schools, housing - are under huge pressure.
I feel desperate about it all and agonise about what I can do to make things better. But I want to say to others who feel the same way, please don’t blame the EU and immigrants. Please consider, rather, that we are where we are mainly, in my opinion, because of the austerity measures of our current UK government. If we want to change things, all of us, in whatever way we feel able, need to work to get into power people who will bring about that change.
I stuffed envelopes for the political party I support for the first time a few weeks ago - it felt good, I was doing something!
Blaming a group of people (this time it’s immigrants - who will it be next time?) for our problems and voting to leave the EU is not helpful. It plays into the hands of the people my father fought to defeat. I just cannot bear it if his sacrifice was in vain.
