WIMBLEDON might have to abide by an 11pm curfew, but last weekend that rule didn’t apply to Dawlish Lawn Tennis Club.

The club was hosting its biggest fundraising event to date, a 24-hour fundraising marathon held on Saturday.

Four dedicated players, Ben Jackson, Aidan Dell, Peter Elver, and Luis Muldoon, took on continuous doubles matches against various opponents from 10am Saturday through to 10am Sunday.

The event even saw a guest appearance from James Temple, head coach at Exeter Golf & Country Club who was kind enough to come over at 3am to support the event.

The event drew an impressive crowd, with more than 100 people attending throughout the day. Club head coach, Robert Elver, who oversaw the proceedings, which included various events for members and visitors of all ages, expressed his delight, stating; ‘Having been head coach for 30 years this year, I am pretty sure this has been the biggest event the club has ever held.’

The fundraiser coincided with the Wimbledon weekend, adding to the excitement and enthusiasm surrounding the event. The club managed to raise more than £500 on the day, contributing to their crowdfunding campaign.

Chairman Jason Hatherley extended his gratitude to the support team, including Robert Elver, Liv Howe, Toby Broom, and Jake Broom, who ensured the 24-hour team stayed awake and focused throughout the event.

Jason also acknowledged the efforts of Corrine Jackson, Jo Hussain, Kerry Elver, Stella Isaac, Anthony Russell, Ivana Smikova, Dali Rusnacik, and Tim Matthews, who played integral roles in organizing the day’s activities, including a popular barbecue and refreshments.

The success of this 24-hour fundraising event serves as a testament to the strong sense of community and dedication within Dawlish Lawn Tennis Club.

The funds will go towards supporting the club’s ongoing initiatives and further enhancing the tennis experience for its members.
