TEIGNMOUTH Farmers’ Market is marking its twelve birthday this weekend with free birthday cake, local produce and a celebration of the farmers and producers who have made the monthly market a town-centre favourite.

The birthday celebrations will take place on Saturday, August 29, in the Triangle, from 10am to 2pm.

Teignmouth Town Mayor Lillian Chasteau will hand out free birthday cake at around 11am.

The cake has been made especially for the occasion by Teignmouth-based Pat-a-Cake Bakery, one of the market’s own regular producers.

Market manager and farmer David Lamboll, of Shute Fruit and Produce, said the birthday was an opportunity to thank the customers who continue to support the market.

‘We want to thank all our loyal customers who support us every month’, he said.

‘We couldn’t have this market without farmers and producers bringing their own produce to town, and the customers willing to buy local’.

Among those celebrating will be Chris Thorp of Springfield Nursery, which has been part of the market since its early days.

‘I always look forward to this market. It is hard to believe it’s been twelve years’, he said.

The market brings together farmers and producers, offering everything from locally grown fruit and vegetables, meat and cheese to cakes, preserves, plants, pasta sauces and vegetarian and vegan meals.

Most of the produce comes from within 30 miles of Teignmouth and is sold by the people who produce it.

Regular stalls include Black Rabbit Farm, Beardon Farm, Curworthy Cheese, Little Oak Farm, Pat-a-Cake, Shute Fruit and Produce, Springfield Nursery, Shillingford Organics and Westcott Boer Goats, alongside a range of other local producers.

Organisers are asking visitors not to bring gifts, but instead to join them in singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to the market.

The Teignmouth Farmers’ Market is held on the last Saturday of every month, from 10am to 2pm, in Teignmouth town centre, with the permission of Teignmouth Town Council and backing from the Teignmouth Traders Association.

It also receives regular support from Teignbridge District Council.
