► PRESENTED TO PRINCESS ANNE

Angela French, a 15-year-old pupil at Notre Dame convent, was one of a number of supporters of the Save The Children Fund, presented to Princess Anne at the Festival Hall in London. The Princess has shown a tremendous interest in its work. She was the central character in a documentary film of the work done by the SCF in Kenya. The film was made by a team from the  Blue Peter children’s programme.

Angela has been fund raising for many years on her own initiative, by knitting and collecting used postage stamps for sale. On one occasion, she organised a coffee morning at Ashbury Lodge, which raised £30 for the Fund.

► MARBLES CAUSE SERIOUS ACCIDENT

Children’s marbles, scattered in Fordens Lane, Holcombe, caused the death of a valuable Anglo-Arab horse. Fire Cloud, a 14.2-hand bay mare, owned by 14-year-old Lynne Christian, was being led to the paddock after its night’s stabling when it trod on the marbles. It ran away onto the main road, where there was a collision with a motor car, whose three holiday makers were returning to Farnborough. The horse was thrown onto the car, and the roof was crushed almost to the level of the steering wheel. The occupants were miraculously not seriously hurt, and given medical attention, but the horse had to be destroyed.

► PIER

Dear Sir

I was interested to see a report of the Council meeting at which the future of the pier was discussed. How right was Mr Doel in claiming that the pier is a disgrace to the town and an eyesore. What a pity it cannot be demolished!

May I suggest a solution? Find some rich eccentric American, who is so taken with England’s quaint charm, that he will buy it as it stands and transport it to the USA, there to stand beside the famous London Bridge.

Yours facetiously, S E F Hammond.

► WATER SHORTAGE

Owing to the exceptionally dry weather during the past four months, several of the Board’s reservoirs have become seriously depleted, and the Board appeals to all consumers to exercise the strictest economy in the use of water. Water drawn through a hose pipe for private gardens or washing cars is prohibited from November 4th until further notice.

► WISE WORDS

No man goes further than the man who knows not where he is going. You cannot make the poor rich by making the rich poor. If you want life to be plain sailing, don’t get the wind up.

► MORE BIRDS RESCUED

A plea for swifter notification about damaged or oiled-up birds has been made by a unit operating a rescue service in South Devon. Mr Tony Kerr, a ranger with the South Devon Wild Life Youth Service Group, said: ‘The plea is especially for all hawks, owls and oiled sea birds, as a matter of an hour or two can make a world of difference in the battle for survival.’
