A decaying mural masterpiece by controversial artist Robert Lenkiewicz is the target of a half million pound crowdfunding appeal, writes Ted Hynds.

His son Reuben (pictured right) hopes to save the massive 3,000 sq ft work overlooking Plymouth’s picturesque Barbican.

The city council recently made it the subject of a preservation order.

But it is in urgent need of remedial work and only wooden lattice prevents it from disintegrating.

At his Teignmouth art gallery, where he exhibits and sells his father’s work and limited print editions, Reuben, 49, said: ‘The situation has become critical.

‘Unless restoration is carried out quickly this iconic work will be lost – which is why I turned to crowdfunding.
