WITH all the tickets for Teignmouth Town Council’s free VJ Day cream tea having been snapped up, residents in the town are being encouraged to attend two other events in the town.

The first is a 9am flag-raising ceremony in The Triangle on Friday August 15.

It will be led by Mayor Cllr Cate Williams and provide an opportunity for both celebration and reflection, 80 years to the day that the Second World War came to an end with Japan’s surrender following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Also set to take place on Friday is the 9.15pm lighting of the beacon at the War Memorial on the Upper Den Carriageway.

Cllr Wiliams will once again be taking the lead. She said: ‘I’m delighted that all the free tickets we had available for our cream tea at Bitton House have been allocated and I’m very much looking forward to the occasion.

‘It’s also my hope that we’ll be joined by plenty of people in The Triangle at 9am and the War Memorial at 9.15pm.

‘August 15 1945 is a date we should never forget and always be grateful for.

‘It marked the start of what is now 80 years since the last world war and the relative peace and opportunities that have followed since

‘Please come and join us to mark this very special day.’
