JUST one egg has been laid on a new nest built by the Dawlish Black Swans.

It appeared a week ago on a raised area in the middle of the Brook and so far, no others have been laid.

Dad Bert continues his egg-sitting duties but there are fears the nest on the ‘island’ in the Brook is not a safe location.

Keen swan watchers, the owners of holiday cottage Pilchard Cottage, believe the precarious nature of the site may mean the nest won’t survive.

Its position is very close to the waterline so any rise in water level would wash it away.

The prolific breeding pair of dad Bert and mum Kimba have produced numerous offspring over the last few years.

The area they have chosen this time is unusual.

There is a man made nesting site at Tuck’s Plot, high above the water and they previously nested in rushes beside the Brook.

But the Brook has recently been cleared by volunteers of WADE, the group set up to improve the waterway and its surroundings.

It is understood the town’s waterfowl wardens are monitoring the situation.
