B Hall, of Bishopsteignton, writes:
The lead article in last week's Teignmouth Post gave what seemed a worrying scenario for those who value Teignmouth, its character and surrounding countryside.
It is bizarre that Teignbridge Council should quote a figure from somewhere that 780 people every three years wanted to move to the town as a basis for policy. I'm sure that thousands of people round the country would like to move there but is that the criterion for building extra housing? Surely local basic housing need should be the basis, not up-market housing aspirations.
If it were to happen the town would become over-urbanised and less attractive to visit, damaging recent progress with advancing the tourism aspects.
Any future plans should involve full consultation and assessment with the whole community rather than an attempt to fast-track a promised economic bonanza (for some, particularly developers and property speculators).
If what is indicated so far is part of the the vague new government policy of 'Localism' then maybe it needs strangling at birth ?THIS AND OTHER LETTERS IN OUR DIGITAL EDITION
