FAMILIES looking for the perfect autumn day out need look no further than the South Devon Railway, which is preparing to welcome visitors for a weekend of steam-powered adventure on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th October.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Dart Valley, the October Family Fun Weekend offers a rich mix of nostalgia, nature and hands-on experiences.
Heritage steam trains will be running throughout the event, giving passengers the chance to step back in time and soak up the changing colours of the Devon countryside.
At Buckfastleigh Station, you can enjoy riverside walks, award-winning gardens, and visit the museum, gift and model shop. Trains will run to Totnes near to the mainline station.
One ticket opens the door to a trio of local attractions, all within easy reach of the station.
Visitors can come face to face with inquisitive otters and free-flying butterflies at Dartmoor Otters & Buckfast Butterflies, while just across the tracks at Totnes, rare breeds and furry friends await at the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm.
It’s an all-in-one day out that combines wildlife encounters with steam heritage and countryside charm.
Those with an interest in local history and photography can also explore A Story of South Devon Railway, the striking on-site exhibition that continues until 2nd November.
Featuring a fascinating visual journey through time, the exhibition highlights the role the line has played in shaping the region’s cultural and transport landscape.
The event is part of South Devon Railway’s wider aim to offer more than just a train ride.
With a strong focus on family days out and immersive experiences, it continues to build on its reputation as one of Devon’s most loved heritage attractions.
Tickets are available now via the South Devon Railway website, and early booking is advised for what promises to be a weekend full of steam, scenery and smiles.
