VOLUNTEERS are being recruited to help breathe a new lease of life into a run-down and tired area of Newton Abbot.

Members of the town’s community interest company are on the look-out for hard-working residents who fancy sprucing up the Penn Inn roundabout.

Plans for the crumbling gateway to the town include planting exotic flowers, trees, shrubs and bulbs.

A dedicated bunch of people have been digging and clearing out the area which will house the foliage – which has been donated by Plant World.

John Pike, vice chairman of the interest company, said: ‘Our ambition is to make Penn Inn Roundabout a safe and attractive public space.

‘We have been delighted by the enthusiastic response we have already received to our plans.

‘We are already working with a team of volunteers but would love to hear from anyone else who would like to get involved.’

Anyone interested in lending a helping hand is being asked to drop by the roundabout on Thursdays from 2pm until 5pm.

Clearance work is expected to last for another four weeks.
