Sixty-seven members of Teignmouth Golf Club's seniors' section, including club captain John Hall, attended the seniors' annual meeting, writes Bob Gateshill.
Outgoing seniors' captain Robbie Wight, with assistance from secretary/treasurer John Maubach, gave the members a warm welcome and conducted procedings.
Two seniors were successful in senior open competitions at other clubs – John Maubach was the overall winner at Crediton, while Barry Doddington won the visitors' prize at East Devon.
Wight organised a lunch and an 18-hole competition for 21 past and present senior captains, which was won by Derek Holloway.
Other competition winners through the year were: Spring Foursomes – Ray Allen and Chris Cole; Summer Tankard – Peter Coxill; Arnot Salver – Tony Hodgson and Ian White: Winter Knockout – Tony Hodgson; James Cup – Tony Hodgson.
The officers were elected, after which Wight handed over to the incoming seniors' captain, John Sprague who, after the meeting ended, started his year of office with his drive-in.
The seniors had a competition to guess the length of this drive, which was carried out using rather antiquated equipment. All gathered round as Sprague took to the first tee for his drive, which was, not surprisingly, managed with aplomb.
The person who guessed the correct distance of 149.5 yards was John Budge, who donated his winnings to the senior captain's charity, Rowcroft Hospice.
Wight advised that the distance was 43.4 yards more than he achieved last year.
