TEIGNMOUTH’S Broadmeadow Sports Centre has been shortlisted for two prestigious building awards.
The extensive refurbishment of Broadmeadow Sports Centre, which reopened in July last year, is among the finalists in the Leisure and Tourism category of the Michelmores Property Awards and has been nominated for the Retrofit category of the Constructing Excellence South West (CESW) Awards.
The Broadmeadow refurbishment delivered modern, fit-for-purpose leisure facilities while enabling Teignbridge District Council to achieve key decarbonisation objectives.
Works included extending studio space and gym areas, updating changing rooms and installing an accessible entry and reception area, along with the installation of more energy efficient heating and insulation through air source heat pumps, rooftop solar panels, heat recovery ventilation and insulation.
The major project was not without its challenges, including designing within a highly constrained existing structure.
The works included fabric improvements to enhance insulation, alongside essential repair and maintenance activities.
A Teignbridge District Council spokesperson said: ‘This success is a testament to the dedication and collaboration of both the internal and external project teams, who worked tirelessly over a period of nearly three years to plan and deliver the scheme.’
Warren Thorne, Project Director at AECOM, said: ‘It is highly fitting that the Broadmeadow Sports Centre Decarbonisation and Refurbishment Project has been shortlisted for two separate awards, each recognising the fundamental elements that define the success of this outstanding initiative.
‘The project’s inclusion on the shortlist for the Leisure and Tourism Project of the Year category acknowledges the significant strides made by Teignbridge District Council in transforming the existing facility into a modern, engaging community hub. This redevelopment reflects a clear response to the evolving demands of health, fitness and wellbeing in the 21st century.
‘Furthermore, the project’s shortlisting for a Constructing Excellence South West Award in the Retrofit category stands as a testament to the Council’s strong commitment to sustainability and progress towards net zero.
‘It highlights the potential to maximise the value of existing building assets, demonstrating how they can be thoughtfully reimagined and successfully adapted to serve a renewed purpose in a contemporary context.’
Rob Walker, Contracts Manager at Nevada Construction said: ‘It is incredibly rewarding to see the Broadmeadow Sports Centre recognised by both the Michelmores Property Awards and the CESW Awards. As this is a local project, it holds special significance for our team.
‘Delivering a space that is both modern and accessible required meticulous attention to detail, particularly when it came to adapting a highly constrained existing structure to meet strict Equality Act standards without compromising the quality of the finish.
‘The extensive fabric improvements and decarbonisation works we carried out are exactly the kind of challenges we excel at.
‘Successfully integrating energy-efficient technologies, such as the air source heat pumps and rooftop solar into an older framework aligns perfectly with Nevada’s core commitment to sustainable construction and future-proofing our community's assets.’
The winners will be announced at Sandy Park Conference Centre in Exeter on Thursday June 25 and the project team will find out the results of the CESW Awards at an awards ceremony held at Aerospace Bristol on Thursday July 16.
