Steve Osgood, of gilbert avenue, teignmouth, writes:
The approach to the town centre down Exeter Road was indeed a truly spectacular gem handed to Teignbridge Council on its appointment.
That wonderful view of the harbour with Shaldon just beyond, is today marred by the consent given to APB for a huge industrial shed on the dockside, and more recently totally wiped out by consents for high rise flats around the now diminished St. Joseph's church.
When I was brought up in Teignmouth and Shaldon, both towns had a clear shape and structure within the landscape. Today the edges are badly scarred.
The view west along Teignmouth promenade now ends in a huge car park and a ragged built up area; across two decades, Teignbridge has failed to sort out the focus of the promenade, the pier on which we used to enjoy Sunday concerts.
When I sailed on the river as a boy, the upper Teign was a visual delight and the whole estuary a dream. Mass housing without the benefit of trees to shape it into the folds of the hills fouls the estuary and besmirches the whole space.
Does Teignbridge Planning Committee have no morals, no visual appreciation, no concern for the long- term future of the estuary and its towns? What is it leaving to our children?MORE LETTERS IN OUR DIGITAL EDITION
