Cllr JUNE GREEN, mayor of Teignmouth, writes:
On behalf of Teignmouth Town Council I wish to place on record our most sincere thanks to all those who helped to make the Remembrance Service of 2013 one of the most successful that the town has known.
It has been estimated that the number of people who took part in the service and those who gathered on the Den to witness this event – which honoured the final sacrifice made by men and women in previous and current battles – numbered more than 2,000.
For the last few years it has been very evident that this service is of increasing importance to our community and how heartening it is to see the number of children and young people who willingly participate – in all weathers – in honour of those who gave their lives for others.
But this event could not take place without a great deal of work in the background and our appreciation goes to the Remembrance Committee chaired by Cllr Vince Fusco, the Rev Preb Graham Stones, the Torbay Brass Band, the Den Bowling Club (which folds more than 1,500 service sheets), Ralph (from the Beachcomber, who removes his tables and chairs), Ken Ball, Mark Cockram, PCSO Liz Francis, Sarah Woolway, Ian Hurst (parade marshal), Roy Jones, the town clerk and staff from Bitton House. They all work tirelessly, giving up their own time, to make sure that everything runs as smoothly as possible.
We must also thank all those who marched in the parade, those who lay more than 50 wreaths at the war memorial on behalf of their organisations and those who came down into the town to make this act of remembrance such a special occasion.MORE LETTERS IN OUR DIGITAL EDITION
