SOME travellers who set up base at a popular Newton Abbot park have quit the site after being served with an eviction notice.

But as half the unwelcome group left Bakers Park yesterday (Aug 6) another camp sprung up less than two miles away at Sandringham Park on the Buckland Estate.

The shift around prompted anger from a string of residents on the estate including district councillor Gordon Hook.

He complained: ‘No sooner had the council acted to remove them from Bakers Park, they decamp to Sandringham.

‘I defend anyone’s right to live the life they choose, provided it does not impact negatively on the lives of others.

Cllr Hook added: ‘In the case of these travellers, sadly they do impact negatively all to often.

‘Everywhere they go, a large quantity of mess is the consequence.’

He insisted he is pushing Teignbridge’s boss Phil Shears and his legal team to take action.

Senior officers at Teignbridge Council launched a campaign to rid the illegal residents from Bakers Park since their arrival nearly two weeks ago.

A convoy of at least 20 vehicles rolled onto the popular dog walking site after knocking down a locked gate.
