A fundraising drive has been launched by Bishopsteignton Scout Group as they prepare for a trip to the International Scout Centre in Switzerland next year.
They plan to spend eight days at the Kandersteg centre in the Swiss Alps in August 2027.
The trip is being led by Amber Gardner, who was inspired to become a Scout Leader when she attended the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, USA in 2019. The experience motivated her to give local young people a similar life-changing opportunity.
Amber said: “The young people will take part in a programme of exciting outdoor challenges designed to build confidence, resilience and teamwork.
“Likely activities will include mountain hiking, via ferrata (climbing on a route with fixed steel cables, rungs and ladders) and and canyoning, all delivered in a safe and supportive environment suited to the group’s age and abilities.
“These experiences encourage young people to step outside their comfort zones, develop self-belief and strengthen their problem-solving skills.
“For many, this will also be their first opportunity to travel abroad. Living and learning alongside Scouts from different countries and cultures will give them first-hand experience of cultural exchange, helping to promote understanding, respect and global citizenship.”
The expedition will include 20 young people and seven leaders from Bishopsteignton Scout Group, along with 12 young people and one adult from River Teign Sea Scouts and Teign Explorers.
The Bishopsteignton Scouts are now fundraising towards the trip, with part of the money earmarked for helping those on lower incomes to take part. Their next events are a Community Big Breakfast at Bishopsteignton Community Centre on Saturday, May 16, and a Rum & Reggae afternoon at the Cockhaven Arms on Saturday, June 6.
Any businesses that would like to sponsor or otherwise support the Switzerland trip is asked to contact Elaine Cawthraw, Chair of the 1st Bishopsteignton Scout Group Trustees, on 07850 289771.
