THE first stage of the huge Morrisons development at Broadmeadow has started. Contractors have begun permanent planting works on the upper playing fields, and are expected to be completed next week. The planting is the first step in the development of the site, which will include a supermarket and fuel station, and is required as part of the pre-construction stage to help make sure that the project meets its goals for addressing ecological issues on the site. The new planting will replace loss of habitat in the area of the new access road which is planned for the development. A Teignbridge Council spokesman said: 'We're pleased to see this first step towards the redevelopment of Broadmeadow underway. 'An important part of the planning permission is to make sure that work is done to help reduce effects on the environment, and this new planting will provide a useful habitat for wildlife in the area.'
