A man killed while walking on the A380 in Newton Abbot on Sunday, July 26, has been identified as 30-year-old divorcee Gareth Robert Toms, also known as Frank Hunter.

Mr Toms, a builder who lived in Church Street, Paignton, and was originally from Nottingham, had been struck by at least one vehicle while walking through unlit roadworks by the junction of Aller Brake Road about 1.30am.

Two drivers were subsequently arrested and released on bail pending further enquiries.

An inquest into Mr Toms’ death was opened and adjourned this week by coroner Ian Arrow.

The cause of death has yet to determined, although Mr Toms sustained what were described as serious injuries. His identity was determined by a fingerprints expert.

The police have requested that his body be retained for 28 days while their investigation continues.
