THE Donald Crowhurst film will be screened in Teignmouth on the day of its national release.

The Mercy was filmed in the resort two summers ago and is finally hitting the big screen on February 9.

Starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz, it tells the story of Crowhurst’s ill-fated entry in the Sunday Times Golden Globe single-handed around the world race in 1968.

He set sail from Teignmouth in his trimaran, but soon ran into problems, and his yacht was found abandoned in the Atlantic. He was never seen again, and it was soon discovered he had faked his logs and never left the Atlantic.

The saga has become one of the legends of the sea and is still bringing publicity to the resort 50 years later.

Pavilions manager, Nikki Small said: ‘We are delighted to have the opportunity to show The Mercy from release.

‘The first week we will be running the special event evening performances, with dress to impress, red carpet, and a glass of bubbly on arrival.

‘We are looking forward to this very special film coming to the Pavilions.’

The Mercy will be showing from its release date of February 9, with two screenings a day, through to February 23.
