OCEAN Rebellion, an offshoot of environmental pressure group Extinction Rebellion, is staging a protest in Teignmouth today (Saturday).

It forms part of a national protest taking place this weekend to highlight the parlous state of our oceans, rivers and waterways.

One of the organisers, Mike Puleston, said: ‘These are in the worst state they have been in for 40 years or more.

‘Teignmouth, particularly, faces special issues such as the large polluting ships moored in the bay, the loss of beach due to the railway works, and the resumption of the silt dumping programme.’

The socially distanced protest promises to be a colourful one, with the Red Rebels making a return after a successful recent protest in Newton Abbot town centre.

Anyone wanting to join the protest can meet the group at the lighthouse on The Den in Teignmouth at 10am. The gathering is expected to last three hours.
