Richard Younger-Ross, of Teignmouth, former Teignbridge MP, has sent us a copy of his letter to Cllr Stuart Barker, deputy leader of Teignbridge Council.

I fully support the redevelopment of the Carlton Theatre. I am, however, concerned that only a share of £2.5 million has been allocated for this project, and that is spread over three years.

The proposals that the council approved three years ago were estimated at up to £8 million. I believe, as have previous administrations and the current users of the theatre, that refurbishment would be shortsighted and a waste of money as the life of the building is very limited.

Morrisons have given £9.8 million for community development. The council will still hold £7.3 million; could some of this be used in Teignmouth? The people of Teignmouth expect a fair share of this, in particular as the superstore will have most impact on the businesses of the town.

My questions are:

a) Is the £2.5 million the total for the project or will match funding be sought and if so what do you expect the total spend to be?

b) Could you therefore explain what your proposals are?

c) Will you ensure Teignmouth gets its fair share?

d) Is it for a new build theatre or a refurbishment of the existing?

e) How much is allocated for the theatre and how much for the seafront?

f) Will any of this be used to top up costs of rebuilding the Carlton?

g) Do you have any proposals for improving parking in the town?

h) Would you support funding other leisure facilities in the town?

i) Will any money be available for youth facilities or those for elderly people?MORE LETTERS IN OUR DIGITAL EDITION
