A JOINT proposal on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) from seven district councils, including Teignbridge, has been submitted to the Minister for Local Government and English Devolution.

Thousands of ultra low emission vehicles registered in Teignbridge – as campaigners group call for more equal access across UKFollowing the Government’s request for initial proposals on LGR in Devon, a proposal was submitted on Friday, March 21.
Under this proposal, Teignbridge would become part of a new unitary authority with three other councils - South Hams, West Devon and Torbay.
This is still subject to detailed proposals being submitted in November, with a decision expected from government by May 2026.
New unitary councils are unlikely to come into being before April 2028, the Mid-Devon Advertiser understands.
In a covering letter addressed to Minister for Local Government and English Devolution, Jim McMahon OBE MP, the district council Leaders said that they are ‘deeply concerned with both the process and the timetable of Local Government Reorganisation being imposed on Devon’, but that, given the chance, could ‘deliver a road map with tangible targets moving towards savings under a plan which will be less expensive to deliver and will deliver a much more resilient outcome.’
