A TEIGNMOUTH councillor has claimed the public relations campaign to try to improve the resort’s water quality ‘is not working’.
Cllr Paul Burgess was speaking at a town meeting on Tuesday after the Teignmouth Post revealed last week that the town was receiving adverse national publicity because it was one of 25 towns in danger of failing to meet the new higher EU standards for bathing water pollution. That could mean notices having to be displayed advising against swimming, which would be a huge blow to the tourist industry.
There was also a call for South West Water to make public how often sewage was discharged into the sea after heavy rainfall.
Cllr Burgess was critical of efforts to encourage the public and householders to do their bit to ensure pollutants were kept out of the sea.
