A GREEN revolution is one step closer as six brand-new electric car charging points have been given the go-ahead.

A partnership between district and county councils has borne fruit as the demand for public charging points increases.

New chargers are set for Barton Car Park, Dawlish, and the Newfoundland Way and Forde House Carparks in Newton Abbot.

The machines will be installed next year.

A spokesman for Teignbridge Council said: ‘As part of the Deletti project, a partnership of the county and district councils, charge points in Barton Car Park, Dawlish, and the Newfoundland Way and Forde House Carparks in Newton Abbot will be in place next year.

‘Plans for more charging points in the district are under discussion and are dependent on the outcome of funding bids.”

District councillor, and executive Member for climate change, Teignbridge Council, Jackie Hook was thrilled the chargers got the green light.

She said: Teignbridge Council has been working with Gamma Energy to find sites in the district that will serve people who wish to purchase an electric vehicle but don’t have off street parking.

She explained: ‘Teignbridge Council urged town and parish council’s to look at their community and identify sites.

‘There are a further three sites in Teignmouth and one in Dawlish still to come.

‘The Den Crescent site in Teignmouth will also have a shared electric CoCars vehicle available for car club members. This provides an alternative to car ownership.

‘Each hub will have two chargers and two batteries capable of charging four vehicles simultaneously.

‘The incoming prohibition of new petrol and diesel vehicles makes it more important to provide a charging network facility which can cope with future needs.

Cllr Hook added: ‘By working with Devon County and Gamma Energy we have managed to secure the first on street EV chargers for our District. These will use 100 per cent renewable electricity.

‘I hope the provision of the chargers will encourage many more people to make their next vehicle purchase an electric one, reducing the impact of air pollution even further.

‘This on-street provision will be particularly important to those residents who don’t have off-street parking.

‘They will be in addition to chargers that are due to be installed in Newfound-land Way Car Park later this Summer.’
