POWDERHAM Castle’s winter wonderland Christmas event had to close early yesterday after heavy rain led to rising water levels.
Organisers of the popular celebrations decided to shut early as a safety precaution following prolonged rain during the day which left part of the grounds under water.
One attendee said: ‘We had to leave Powderham Castle rather earlier than planned this evening due to water levels rising.’
The castle’s Christmas event is enjoyed by thousands every year as the grounds are decorated with festive illuminations, displays and music.
The event had to close early as a precaution due to the rising water levels at the entrance and exit to the site following days of heavy rain and the fact that the grounds are close to the River Exe.
The castle was due to open as normal again today.
