Town councillors have unanimously rejected Teignbridge Council's Core Strategy document. They fear a major population explosion for the town, with the strategy proposing more than 1,000 houses. Most of the homes are earmarked for west Teignmouth. And a special town council meeting on Monday heard dire warnings that the character of Teignmouth could be ruined.Members will put their heads together to come up with a scheme showing how they believe the town should grow in the next 20 years.Ironically the district authority's plan contains matters with which most councillors agree. These include employment opportunities, youth facilities and regeneration of the town centre. There is even a suggestion of a mixed marina. But without doubt the major opposition is to the number of houses planned, and also to a new road from the Broadmeadow estate to the Exeter Road to service the west Teignmouth area. And it was the general area of the River Teign estuary and the impact on Bishopsteignton which created much of the anxiety. Now councillors – several members of the public who attended the meeting also spoke vociferously against the strategy – will do their best to come up with a suitable alternative.
