TEIGNBRIDGE has voted to leave the European Union. The decision was announced at around 4am, today (June 24).

The outcome matched the national result officially declared two hours later with 52% of the votes cast to leave the EU.

A total of 44,363 people in Teignbridge voted to leave with 37,949 people backing the stay campaign and a total of 57 votes were rejected.

Newton Abbot MP, Anne Marie Morris, who has been campaigning to leave said: ‘It’s absolutely wonderful, I am absolutely delighted that the people of Teignbridge have voted in favour of leave.

‘It’s a great result and frankly with 44,000 for leave and 37,000 for remain, that really shows that we had a huge turnout and I think that’s absolutely fabulous.

A total of 82,377 Teignbridge residents came out in force to vote in the EU referendum, which equates to a 79.4 per cent turn out. The national turnout was 72%. Within the district 54% of the electorate voted to leave with 46% to remain.

The number of postal votes issued was a record for Teignbridge with nearly 21,000 sent out resulting in a 92% turnout for those who planned ahead.
