A SECOND attempt to try and fill an empty seat on Newton Abbot Town Council got underway this week.
Not a single person put themselves forward to take up the new Brunel Ward job in last month’s town and district elections.
Now members of the town council are on the hunt for a new colleague to join them in the chamber by being co-opted onto the authority.
All of the candidates will be voted on by the existing town councillors before the right person is sworn into office at a meeting later in the year.
Mayor, Cllr Richard Jenks, said at Wednesday’s meeting: ‘The overwhelming push of the council is to advertise the vacancy and not go for an election.
‘A councillor co-opted onto the council have exactly the same rights as everyone else, but they cannot become mayor.’
Anyone interested in becoming a councillor should contact town clerk Phil Rowe by calling 01626 201120 or emailing [email protected].
