THE first result in was at 11pm - Newcastle upon Tyne Central which saw Chi Onwurah hold the seat for Labour with 24,071 votes and having a 14,937 majority.
The Conservative Steve Kyte was on 9,134. The swing was only 2.1 per cent to Labour.
It was a similar story in the safe Labour seat of Sunderland South where Bridget Phillipson had a 12,324 majority over Tory Paul Howell. Overall Labour was 3 per cent up and the Conservatives 11 per cent up mainly at the expense of UKIP who were way down.
