PRIME Minister Theresa May has ‘reluctantly’ called for a general election on June 8. She said in the last half-hour that the time was right to fix the country’s Brexit divisions and give the UK strong leadership.

‘I have concluded the only way to guarantee certainty and security for years ahead is to hold this election,’ she said outside number 10.

Some punters have poured scorn on the early election, which May hopes will gain backing in Parliament tomorrow.

The PM was not due to go to the country till 2020.

One critic complained: ‘So much for the Fixed Term Parliament Act.’

May said the election, if agreed, would ‘remove the risk of uncertainty and instability’.
