The incident happened at the man was walking his spaniel at Bakers Park near Bradley Lane.

He was approached by the two assailants who initially asked for the time before attacking him and trying to take his dog.

The attempted robbery happened at about 5pm on Wednesday, December 8.

The men are described as around 40 to 45 years old, around 6ft tall and were wearing dark clothes and hats.

The incident is the latest in a series of thefts or attempted thefts of dogs.

A working dog was recently stolen from north Devon but inquiries by the local policing team led to the location and recovery of the dog.

A police spokesman said: ‘Although incidents such as this are infrequent, it prompts us to reflect on dog theft prevention.

‘We should ensure that appropriate security is present on buildings and gardens and that dogs are microchipped with up to date contact details and a tag.

‘Recent photos that include unique markings and characteristics can help in theft appeals and identification.’
