MAJOR plans to redevelop Newton Abbot’s Market Walk are on display this week.

Shoppers are able to catch a glimpse of the proposed £1.9million works which includes modernising shop fronts and putting a glazed roof over the shopping centre.

Stands showcasing Teignbridge Council’s ambitions will be set up tomorrow (September 20) in the Market Square.

The district authority is asking councillors on Monday (September 25) to fork out the six digit number from capital funding.

If approved the work could start in early 2018.

Leader of the council Jeremy Christophers said: ‘The planned investment is the latest step in Teignbridge’s ambition to design and deliver regeneration and improvements schemes that make Newton Abbot more modern and attractive, help attract new businesses and encourage established ones to grow.’

A whistleblower revealed to the Mid-Devon Advertiser that the council has more ambitious plans for the area.

The town’s historic Market Street cinema could be moving into New Look’s Market Walk HQ and the fashion retailer could shift to the defunct post office across the square.

Rumour has it that Cricketfield Car Park could be turned into a multi-storey car park and the former Job Centre building near Sherborne Road could be transformed into a hotel.

Teignbridge Council bought the shopping centre for £13million in February 2016.
