WORK to construct a new fish pass on the River Lemon in Newton Abbot will get underway in June.
The work, due to start on June 1, is part of the Environment Agency’s wider programme of fish migration and biodiversity improvements across the River Teign catchment.
Designed to support fish movement and create a better in-river habitat, it aims to improve the river’s ecological status, bringing it in line with the Water Environment (WFD) Regulations 2017.
It will involve the installation of marginal berms and stone boulder pre-barrages.
A two-stage channel to improve water depth during low flows will also be created.
The benefits of the work include: improved fish passage, more natural flow conditions, better shelter and refuge for fish, increased habitat diversity and greater resilience to seasonal changes.
The work is expected to be completed by September.
Previous work to the river included the removal of the Chipley Mill Weir in 2025, opening around 30km of upstream habitat for salmon and other species to access spawning areas.
