Plans to replace a 1960s shop with five upmarket beach huts have divided opinion in Shaldon.

Developers want to knock down the former Brigantine chandlery and build the luxury timber huts which are predicted to sell for £250,000 each.

So far 24 letters of support for the scheme have been sent to Teignbridge Council, their authors saying the development would add to the area and enhance a 'deteriorating' part of the village,

Planning officers agree and have recommended approval.

But ward member Cllr Chris Clarance has sided with the parish council and the seven people who have objected to the scheme. He has demanded the matter is brought before next Monday's development control committee at Forde House, Newton Abbot.

Cllr Clarance will say the change would be 'highly detrimental' to nearby businesses and that there is no precedent for beach huts in the area.

Previous attempts have been 'highly resisted' and the huts would be 'out of character' with the Shaldon Conservation Area.

The meeting is due to start at 9.45am.
