THIS week I am again grateful to Graham Lucas for a picture he passed to me of Market Street, Newton Abbot, writes Steve Harris.
The picture was taken in the early years of the 20th century and while the Passmore Edwards building and the Alexandra Cinema are familiar to most people there have been a lot of changes on the north side of the street.
The market offices, now found further along the street, had yet to be built as they did not come into being until the redevelopment of the livestock market in the late 1930s.
Another building that was erected after this picture was taken was the Liberal Club.
The Liberal Club was opened on October 19, 1914, just over two months after war had been declared. The cost of the building was put at some £3,000...
