I kick off the new year with a treasured family photograph of my great great uncle Amos Hewings. It was taken circa 1906 and shows Amos with his clay cart on Teign Bridge on his way to the nearby clay cellars of the Stover Canal, writes Steve Harris.

He was working for local haulier J Vallance, of York Terrace, at the time but left soon afterwards. However, the family connection with the horse and cart continued as the position he vacated was filled by my great grandfather.

I often think of them both as I drive along the Old Exeter Road over the same bridge on my way to work over 100 years later.
