Patricia Chapman, of Dawlish, writes:

I disagree with Maureen Mayo and K Underwood regarding removal of free bus passes or charging (Dawlish/Teignmouth Post August 21).

Those enjoying this benefit have worked and paid all their lives and should be entitled to some help in view of low pensions and high transport costs.

Others in society have made a career of not working but no one suggests reducing their benefits.

In London pensioners can use buses, the Underground and certain main line trains at any time of the day or night.

Certainly, advantages are being taken – those who only travel one stop, for example – but this concession makes a great deal of difference to the lives of many people and should not be removed.
