THE roof of Pavilions Teignmouth was 'nearly blown off' last night as the new £5million building hosted Teignbridge’s last BBC Radio 1 Academy.
The Academies have been taking place throughout the district over the past few weeks and they will now move onto Exeter in the run-up to BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend at Powderham Castle.
A packed auditorium was treated to music from local musicians with Indie Rockband Auction For The Promise Club kicking things off.
Singer songwriter Robyn Sherwell then took to the stage to showcase what Teignbridge has to offer before Teignmouth Rocker’s Reigning Days closed the show.
The BBC Introducing gig marks the end of Teignbridge’s run of workshops which included a performance and talk from Craig David at Coombeshead Academy, Newton Abbot.
Tinie Tempah, Jake Bugg, AlunaGeorge, Tom Odell and Laura Mvula will be joining the BBC as it prepares to take over Exeter Pheonix for a week with creative workshops.Leader of Teignbridge Council Jeremy Christophers, who was in attendance, said: 'My attendance was for two purposes, one to see the positive impact of the Radio 1 Academy in Teignmouth and two to see how the £4.5million invest in the Pavilion performed with its first big gig.'I am sure everyone was impressed with what they found, the BBC really put everything into the evening, the lighting rig was massive, the acoustics great, but the highlight was the local band - soon to make it big - Reigning Days, nearly blowing the roof off the new Pavilion.'
