ESSENTIAL maintenance work will be carried out overnight on a key road in and out of Newton Abbot.

Devon County Council will be applying a protective treatment onto the A380, between the Penn Inn Roundabout at Newton Abbot and the Edginswell Interchange in Torbay, from this Thursday.

The work is to prolong the life of the road.

Ahead of this surfacing treatment work, lane closures will initially be needed overnight on Thursday, June 19 and Friday, June 20 from 7pm to 6am to survey and replace any damaged drainage covers and inspection covers. No work will be carried out at the weekend (21 and 22 June).

The main element of the scheme will start from the evening of Monday, June 23, closing both sides of the carriageway from 7pm-6am for up to six nights.

Although the road will be open over the weekend (28 and 29 June) as normal, it’s due to be closed overnight from 7pm on Monday, June 30 and re-open by 6am on Tuesday, July 1.

During these overnight closures an innovative spray treatment will be applied to the road, adding a fine layer of bitumen to stop current deterioration, correct any existing defects and reduce stone loss from the road surface.

Road markings will be refreshed after the surfacing treatment has been completed.

To minimise disruption, Devon County Council's contractor is working collaboratively with SWISCO, on behalf of Torbay Council, to share traffic management, using the same road closures to enable additional highway maintenance work to be undertaken.

During the overnight closures, a fully signed diversion will be in place.
