OPPOSITION has emerged to McDonald’s plan for a new restaurant at a site in Kingsteignton.
Submitted by McDonalds Restaurants Ltd, the application - reference 26/00677/FUL - is seeking permission for alterations to the existing Newton Road restaurant, including replacement heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.
The existing restaurant, formerly operated under the Beefeater brand and known as ‘The Grandstand’ closed in July 2024.
Speaking to the Mid-Devon Advertiser, McDonald’s said they expect the new restaurant to open in late 2026.
It will not include a drive-thru, the fast food giant also confirmed.
At present, planning officers are mulling over the associated documents, including objections submitted by residents.
Several objectors claim the new restaurant will create additional traffic, while others point to the smell and litter that could be generated.
But McDonald’s say the new restaurant will bring ‘significant investment’ to the local area and ‘deliver up to 120 full and part-time jobs’.
McDonald’s employs around 180,000 people across the UK.
Residents have also written to MP Martin Wrigley saying the new McDonald’s will make flooding problems worse.
They say flooding earlier this year had caused hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage to homes and properties, highlighting concerns over the capacity and maintenance of nearby drains.
