WORK its well underway at a town centre scheme to build social rented homes.

The £3.2million pound project at Sherborne House car park will create 23 homes, including 13 one bedroom flats and 10 two-bedrooms flats.

Two ground floor apartments will be suitable for wheelchairs.

The aim is to create social homes offering easy access to shops, public transport links, and services while bringing a brownfield site back into use.

The project is being built by contractors Nevada Construction.

A spokesman said: ‘Work is well underway at our Sherborne House Car Park Passivhaus project in Newton Abbot, with foundations and below-ground works progressing and the footprint of the new homes now clearly taking shape.

‘This scheme will deliver 23 social rented homes, including accessible flats, designed to Passivhaus Plus standard, transforming a brownfield site into high-quality, energy-efficient homes for local people.’

The project has been funded by a £2.7 million grant from the Homes England Affordable Homes Programme along with a £525,000 contribution from the Brownfield Land Release Fund funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) and delivered through the One Public Estate (OPE) programme.

A spokesman for Teignbridge Council which owns the former car park site said: ‘It’s exciting to see work progressing at the Sherborne House Car Park housing development in Newton Abbot.

‘The development will deliver 23 much-needed social rented homes, including accessible flats, while transforming a brownfield site into sustainable, energy-efficient housing for local people.’
