RESIDENTS in Newton Abbot are being offered the chance to be the face of the town’s museum.
The initiative is to collect faces from the community to add to celebratory flags to be displayed in the town’s museum.
The Newton’s Face bunting project will mark five years since the opening of Newton’s Place in the former St Leonard’s Church, Wolborough Street.
The Grade II listed Victorian building is home to the museum, community rooms and Newton Abbot Town Council.
Every Thursday afternoon throughout September Kate Green, Community Engagement Officer, will run creative sessions where people can use different materials to recreate an image of their own face in the main museum space from 2pm to 4pm, starting Thursday September 4.
The resulting images will be printed on A3 bunting and displayed in the museum until Christmas.
Museum Curatorial Assistant Katie Petley-Jones said: ‘October 2025 is the fifth anniversary of the opening of Newton’s Place.
‘We will be running lots of different activities to help us celebrate five years of the museum, town council and community space being in the heart of Newton Abbot. ‘First on the list is our Newton’s Face bunting workshops.
‘As the local community is central to everything that we do here in Newton's Place, we want your face in our gallery of fabulous local people.
‘Our community is very important to us and we want to celebrate the rich diversity of the people we connect with.’
The full list of dates is September 4, September 11, September 18 and September 25.
Booking is not required and people can just pop in to take part, all for free, as is museum admission.
Regular opening hours are Tuesday - Friday 9.30am to 4.30pm and Saturday 9.30am to 1.30pm
The £2.2 million Newton’s Place project was delivered by Newton Abbot Town Council in response to public calls for a better museum and community hub.
The project received significant financial support from a range of donors including the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
