RAILWAYS fan Stephen Taylor – this newspaper’s chief sub-editor – took an unexpected steam trip on Friday – into retirement.
Around 20 colleagues joined him on the South Devon Railway from Buckfastleigh to Totnes in a surprise trip arranged by his partner Alison.
Mr Taylor, retired after more than 50 years in the profession and 42 years at the Mid-Devon Advertiser, knew nothing of the trip.
The surprise outing followed a presentation made by colleagues of cards, good wishes, retirement gifts and a standing ovation.
He said: ‘Somehow or other, the whole office had managed to keep the railway trip from me despite having had extensive emails between them and my partner.
‘It was a wonderful surprise, and I have to thank them for the tremendous send-off they gave me.’
Editorial manager Ruth Davey said: ‘The loyalty, and commitment Steve has given to the company during his four decades here, is immeasurable.’
Managing director Sandra Perraton paid tribute to his long service: ‘He has worked alongside, influenced and mentored scores of colleagues, some who have gone on to work for the nationals and TV.’
Chairman of Tindle Newspapers Sir Ray Tindle said: ‘We are most grateful for all Steve has done over the years and everyone is most appreciative of his dedication to bringing out our excellent paper every week.
‘We all hope you have a happy retirement and please accept our thanks for all you have done,’ he said.
During his career Mr Taylor has seen significant changes in the newspaper industry from the use of hot metal to the introduction of computers and the shift towards digital content.
Mr Taylor’s last day at work – Friday, March 18 – was 42 years to the date he joined the Advertiser as chief reporter in l974 from senior reporting and sub-editing jobs in the West Midlands.
He was promoted to sub-editor in Newton Abbot after several years and then became chief-sub editor, the title he held at retirement.
