PROPOSALS for a new pedestrian crossing for Exminster have been unanimously approved.

Members of the Highways and Traffic Orders Committee have rubber stamped plans for the new zebra crossing outside Exminster Primary School.

It is hoped the new crossing, agreed after extensive efforts to find a school crossing patrol person drew a blank, should be in place for the new autumn term in September.

The £89,000 new crossing will improve safety for both youngsters at the school and villagers.

The school had struggled to recruit anyone to provide the school crossing patrol and there has been no one in place since November 2020 with no one applying for the post.

Now approved, the crossing will have a high friction surface, a reduction of the road width at the crossing point and an increase in the footway width from the school side.

The crossing plans will alleviate safety issues which had been raised by previous patrols at the site.

Devon County Councillor Alan Connett announced the plans had been unanimously approved.

He said: ‘I spoke and voted in favour and was delighted to have the support of fellow councillors.

‘The new crossing is hoped to be in place for the new school term in September.’

The crossing facility is aimed at improving links between residential areas to the east of Exminster, the school and the Deepway Centre and recreation ground.

It is hoped to have a positive effect on promoting healthy and sustainable travel within the community.
