A NEW online book catalogues the fight to remain in the EU by Devon supporters.
You may well have seen their stalls during the Remain-Leave campaign, and the free, 280-page book, Words on the Street, written by Devon for Europe volunteers Simon Chater and Rosemary Schonfeld, weaves together powerful testimony gathered from the public at those street stalls in many towns across Teignbridge.
Photos bring each stall to life, while panels display news headlines on the national events that formed the backcloth to the local campaign.
There are also spreads on the big marches in London that many of Devon’s campaigners went on. Two poems by Loran Waite evoke a typical street stall and the heartbreak felt by many when the campaign ended in failure.
Co-author Simon is a science communicator who lives near Buckfastleigh.
He said: ‘It’s a unique record of this turbulent period in our country’s history.
‘The stories we heard of how Brexit is affecting people’s lives are very moving. So too are the accounts of volunteers’ experiences: we suffered abuse from some, but many others were grateful to us for taking a stand.’
Singer, song-writer and fellow co-author Rosemary lives near Newton Abbot. She said: ‘I found myself part of an extraordinary collection of individuals who all had this in common: we knew the 2016 referendum and its result were deeply flawed and harmful to our country – and we all felt compelled to act.’
Devon for Europe’s chairman, Alex Pilkington, said: “Despite a massive campaign effort and the shift in public opinion towards remaining in the EU, the nation has been failed by its politicians, with consequences that become more evident with each passing day.
‘This beautiful book is a fitting tribute to the hard work and dedication displayed by the wonderful teams of Devon for Europe volunteers. They have helped build an organisation that will continue to campaign for what is right for our country.’
