LIBRARY users in Teignbridge will soon be able to access four branches for longer, with new technology set to extend opening hours beyond the traditional staffed service.
Four Teignbridge libraries - Dawlish, Kingskerswell, Kingsteignton and Teignmouth - are among the 11 libraries due to receive Open Plus under the initial rollout, which is due to begin in July until March 2027.
The scheme follows a successful trial at Cullompton Library earlier this year.
Open Plus allows registered library members to access their local library outside normal staffed opening hours using secure self-service technology.
Depending on the individual library, users could be able to visit from as early as 8am until as late as 8pm, including weekends.
During these extended access periods, visitors will still be able to borrow and return books, use computers and Wi-Fi, study or work in quiet spaces, and make use of photocopying facilities.
The initiative is part of ongoing efforts by Libraries Unlimited - the charity that runs Devon’s libraries - to make libraries more accessible and flexible, enabling residents to fit visits around work, education, childcare and other commitments.
Each participating library will close for around a week while the technology is installed.
Customers will be notified in advance of the temporary closures, and arrangements will be made to extend existing book loans where necessary.
Once installation and testing have been completed, library members will be invited to sign up for Open Plus access by taking part in a short induction before the service officially launches at their local branch.
Staff will continue to be available during normal opening hours to provide support, advice and assistance for those who prefer to visit when the library is staffed.
Further details, including opening times for each participating library and information on how members can register for Open Plus access, will be published in the coming months.
Existing library members with a registered email address will also receive updates ahead of the launch of the new service.
Plans to introduce Open Plus at additional Devon libraries will be considered following feasibility assessments.
